This was the story that was three years in the making. Three years if you count twenty-five issues, a prior mini-series, and various stories appearing sporadically in issues of the regular SONIC THE HEDGEHOG monthly series as well as many of the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG SPECIALS.

Originally described as being the last of his kind, I felt that description limited my options in regards to Knuckles, so I set about a way to give him a family while still being true to the original set-up. My answer was that HE believed himself to be, but that's how things were deliberately set up, as he had a most awesome task awaiting him, and only through rigorous training and discipline could Knuckles even hope to surmount the difficulties that lay in store for him.

For the first time, we learn much of the overall history of the Guardians, and Knuckles' place in the entire scheme of things. More than that, we also reunite him with his father Locke, a development that fans have been clamoring for ever since the series began. It's with this issue that we begin to see how the past shapes not only the present, but the future, so that even though readers now get a sense of where I'm finally going with this series, there's more than enough room for plenty of surprises along the way.

On a somewhat sad note, while "Childhood's End" marks the beginning of a new phase in the life of everyone's favorite echidna, this anniversary tale marks the final outing of Manny Galan as penciller of the book in its current format. (Next month, the book switches to a two story format: the main 16-page adventure followed by a 6-page back-up featuring a supporting character. Manny will be pencilling the next three issues worth of back-up stories only, afterwhich he will only be doing covers.)
