FAN EXPO San Francisco Is Coming Fast

I won’t find out where my exact location will be at the FAN EXPO San Francisco experience taking place during Thanksgiving Weekend from Friday, November 24, thru Sunday, November 26 until sometime during the next few days. I’ll post that info once I receive word from the convention organizers.

To make finding me easier, look for the banner I have posted above. A much larger version will be displayed behind me at the table I’ll be located at. I’ll have a selection of the above-listed items available for sale, but if there’s something in particular you’re looking for and will be attending, please email me and I’ll check to see if I can accommodate your request.

In the meantime, if you’re not able to attend, you can still pre-order THE LARA-SU CHRONICLES: BEGINNINGS hardcover collection and be listed as one of its supporters on the SPECIAL THANKS page both in the book and on the Lara-Su App. If you read the original MOBIUS: 25 YEARS LATER stories published way back when in the pages of the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG series, the new material picks up where the story left off. If you’re a newcomer to the characters and stories, the collection will quickly put you on the same page with the original readers.

Also, I’m bringing some items that have been in storage for more than a decade, such as the first SONIC THE HEDGEHOG T-shirt design I created.

I only have 2 size Medium shirts available. These were created as part of a promotion I worked out with the late SEGA Licensing Manager Robert Leffler for the SONIC SatAM DVD BOXSET and are the last shirts with this design available. I’m selling each for $25 plus $10 shipping and handling for those who can’t make the show. It’s a first come, first served situation. These won’t be listed on my store page until after the convention, so you’ll have to contact me via email prior to that.

Keep checking back for further announcements as we keep getting closer to showtime.

  1. Are you not worried about getting in trouble for reprinting a story that was originally branded under the Sonic IP, under a new unrelated IP? The story will have SEGA-licensed characters like Sonic, Sally, Rotor, and Knuckles featured in it, no?

Don’t you need permission from SEGA to actually publish their characters in this unrelated IP? Otherwise, are you not opening up the door for you to either have your story Cease and Desisted, or just straight up sued?

    1. The short simple answer is I can do this, but I can’t go into details. As long as I’m willing to pay SEGA the usual licensing fee, there’s not a problem. Also, I’m not exploiting Sonic and/or Knuckles in any promotion of the project. Fans may think that’s Knuckles on the cover, but in actuality it’s not, in terms of this project. I own my stories and characters outright.

      1. Forgive me for pushing the matter, but as someone who’s had to work with licensed properties (In Australia, admittedly), you would’ve needed to seek permission from the IP Holder before engaging with this, correct? And simply being willing to pay the licensing fee doesn’t cover the fact that you are using their characters in your IP without permission.

There’s also the matter of you reprinting works that were penciled by Steven Butler. I understand you also contributed to the pencil work as well as the inking, but for those pages that Steven penciled, are you going to be paying him a royalty fee for using his art?

I understand and acknowledge that you own the stories and characters, but this is a reprint of a licensed comic that featured licensed characters such as Sonic. You may say that the promotional material doesn’t feature any licensed characters, but that doesn’t change the fact that the story itself does.

And you acknowledged in your answer that fans may think that it’s Knuckles on the front, when it’s not. But you see, the fact you acknowledge that fans might confuse this character for Knuckles is, in a way, using that character to promote your material.

I suppose an example would be a book cover that shows a young man doing magic. who eerily looks like Harry Potter, and then the story within contains characters from that IP, such as Harry, Hermione, Ron, etc.

Then again, as I said earlier, I am based in Australia and our copyright laws are different here. But I would love for you to break down what you can about what I’ve mentioned above.

      2. Can’t drive and I’m not sure how to plan a trip to San Francisco. So I can’t make it to the fan expo.
I would love to go to California though.
