The Curious Case Of A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DR IVO ROBOTNIK

Every now and then, I receive emails inquiring about the Sonic stories that never were. The stories I hinted at, or submitted written synopsis that never went forward for whatever reason. One of the stories people are really curious about is A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DR ROBOTNIK, which I posted on my original website way back in the day.

Currently, most of the material posted here will eventually be moved to my thelara-suchronicles.com website as my kenpenders.com will present a much broader spotlight on my work through the years as opposed to being primarily focused on Sonic, Knuckles and the Lara-Su cast of characters.

However, A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DR IVO ROBOTNIK is one of those items that will be available on both sites, so without further ado, I present my script as it was originally presented to Scott Fulop, my editor at Archie at the time, and Bob Harris, the SEGA Licensing Manager at the time. I’ll have more to say after the story.

This story was submitted as is after the initial story pitch had been approved. Either Dave Manak or Art Mawhinney was going to be assigned to pencil it with either Jon D’Agostino or Rich Koslowski assigned to ink it. But that never happened, and when told the story was not moving forward, my then-partner Mike Kanterovich and I wrote the following memo to Archie and SEGA:

Unfortunately, we were unable to change any minds and this will go down as one of those unsolved mysteries in SONIC lore.

Incidentally, this is the format Mike & I and later myself as a solo act submitted every script in until SONIC THE HEDGEHOG issue 47 when every script I submitted going forward was all text.

Keep checking back as there will be an UNPUBLISHED SONIC section once this site is revamped sometime in 2024. I’m currently working on material for THE LARA-SU CHRONICLES: BEGINNINGS hardcover collection as well as THE LARA-SU CHRONICLES app, and that will be my primary focus until then.

Please feel free to comment, criticize or ask questions. I do read everything and I do respond when warranted. Thanks for taking the time to check this out.

  1. I loved reading this! A delightful story that the comic would’ve been lucky to have printed in its pages. šŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing, and best luck continuing work on The Lara-Su Chronicles: Beginnings hardcover collection and the app!

  2. Very neat to see this! The story is definitely a fun one, and it’s a shame it never made it to print as I’m sure lots of readers would have enjoyed it. Very much suits the silly tone of many of those early issues.

    1. It was actually one of the earlier stories Mike and I submitted, and I have no idea these many years later why it never went forward into production.

    1. It could’ve seen print in the series as early as issue 15, and would’ve been a better fit considering the cover of that issue featured Robotnik by himself.

  3. Greate post. Ņšeep writing such kind of information on your blog.

    Im really impressŠµd by it.

    1. My postings may be intermittent during the next few weeks, but there will be more to look forward to. I’m just juggling a number of things in order to get my book THE LARA-SU CHRONICLES: BEGINNINGS out the door to the printer as well as a number of responsibilities. Thanks for the comments.

  6. Nice Dr.Robotnik comic Ken. I donā€™t understand why it wasnā€™t published when itā€™s good. Why people arenā€™t interested in something that seems like a good idea but I see it happens to you.
    To be brushed off.
Iā€™ve run into the same problem with a place that I wanted to speak at,with a power point and they were not interested. When I spoke there before. Itā€™s funny how in life sometimes the stars align and sometimes not.
I hope I understood your situation correctly. I know I donā€™t always have it right.

  7. I thought of a topic. Selling art commissions and the best way to do that.
But in the end itā€™s your blog. Just an idea thatā€™s all.

  8. Hmm my post isnā€™t here. In case I lost it.
Great job on the Dr.Robotnik comic.
It didnā€™t work out did it. Itā€™s always strange to me when someone brushes off a good idea or something important.
Thatā€™s too bad it didnā€™t work out for you.
Iā€™ve had it happen with artwork and at the police station where I once spoke.
An idea for a topic would be doing art commissions. The process of it.
Iā€™ve done some art commissions but I could always do better.

  9. Never mind that last post ken. Ugh I repeated myself because I didnā€™t see the post.
    Thank you for your patience.
